Homemade Marshmallow Root & Slippery Elm Leave In

MARSHMALLOW ROOT AND SLIPPERY ELM LEAVE IN (modified by pdthompson on BHM's MHM thread)

"Based on Love your tresses detangling spray with Marshmallow Root and Slippery Elm (She has a youtube video that shows how she makes it).  I left out the Argan oil because I wanted it to be more of the consistency of the KCKT).   I only use a fingertip amount of extra virgin olive oil mixed with castor oil before applying my Flax seed gel after applying this leave in because my hair is very fine but dense and APL which can get weighed down and oily with a lot of product.  I am still playing around with the ingredients but so far I like it.  I also leave it in the fridge.  I hope this is helpful."

MARSHMALLOW ROOT - 3 TBSP
DISTILL WATER 3 CUPS
VITAMIN E OIL 20 DROPS
ALOE VERA Gel 1 TBSP
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL - 15 DROPS
LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL - 15 DROPS
SLIPPERY ELM - 1 TBSP
1/3 DISTILL WATER
SPRAY BOTTLE

COMBINE MARSHMALLOW ROOT, WATER, SLIPPERY ELM, AND BOIL ON LOW TO MED HEAT FOR 15 MINUTES. ALLOW TO COOL AND STRAIN HERBS.  FILL 1/3 OF SPRAY BOTTLE WITH DISTILLED WATER AND ADD STRAINED HERBS MIXTURE.  ADD 1 TBSP OF ALOE VERA GEL, VITAMIN E OIL, ESSENTIAL OILS AND SHAKE.

Personally, I would use Eucalyptus and Jojoba oils as replacements. I would also have to find an aloe vera gel that does not have TEA in it.

RAW HONEY

Ooh wee! I am learning about raw honey and I can't believe the many beneficial uses it offers to us mere mortals. Reason for my interest is the Max Hydration Method, which requires raw honey as an inportant ingredient in the Cherry Lola treatment stage.

A quick visit to Hippie Brown Girl's fabulous blog enlightened me greatly.

I mean, it can be used directly on the face as a cleanser that has moisturizing, antibacterial and other healing properties!

I love it and can't wait to get that into my life.

With all the beekeepers in Dominica, I would think I could find this easily but, um, nope. Or at least, not yet, anyway.

I have 5 gallons of this stuff in my Amazon cart waiting to be purchased. I might just have Ms. G bring me all the things I need from the US of A! Dang, its at times like this, I miss home.

Anyway, more info on raw honey and many other great things - beautywise -  are available here - http://hippiebrowngirl.com/2014/03/24/homemade-shampoo-conditioner-for-natural-hair/

I think I'll get it at some point, but not quite yet.

CREAMY CRACK WARS! RELAXER REVIEW

So my last relaxer was a nightmare. It was in the first week of February and I used vitale which burnt the crap out if my scalp. It itched fiercely for weeks.

It was very depressing.

So for the next relaxer, I waited for the 2nd week of April (Thursday 11th) and used Optimum Care Salon Collection in super.

The results were phenomenal. I combed out my new growth, based the area around my head and applied the pre treatment lotion. I then worked the relaxer onto my hair, taking the time to correct problem spots.

I took longer than suggested on the instructions but the results were great. My hair relaxed 95% of the way! The only problem spots I have are at my right temple and a little section where old texlaxed hair needs to be straightened.

For the entire week, my hair was straight but had thickness and body. I added oil once a day and occassionally applied moisture mix as well, wrapping it every night.

Today I put the rest of the relaxer pretreatment in my hair then washed. i also used the relaxer shampoo just as a way to ensure all relaxer was Out. Them I put keratin in my hair and left it for a while. The I followed up with se con. My hair was silky. It air dried over the next few hours. I then applied moisture mix and oil to seal, wrapped it up.

We'll see how it looks tomorrow.

HAIR & PRODUCT REVIEW

I washed my hair for the first time since my touch up on Tuesday afternoon. The process was very typical, except for the fact that I used my Aloe Vera shampoo and then followed up with my new Tea Tree Shampoo from Nature's Gate. I am in LOVE!!! It had bubbles like normal shampoo, but without the phthalate of course! And, once rinsed, my hair had NO TANGLES!!!! I just couldn't believe it. This, despite the serious scritching I did due to having sulfur mix on my scalp.

Nature's Gate Rainwater Shampoo

I followed up with Aphogee Keratin con for about 5 minutes and rinsed. Then I applied the SEO Con (not the DC). The first application was in for approximately 5 minutes but was not enough as my hair didn't feel as moisturized as I like, so, while in the shower, I applied it one last time and my hair felt perfect. After rinsing, I left my hair to airdry 98% of the way with a drive to pick up the kids (windows down).

I later blowdried on low-cool and then applied Rusk thermal serum, then bowdried on low-medium while combing with my shower comb. Then I sprayed my hair with moisture mix and blowdried on low-high, using my paddle brush. I applied a little CO pomade.

My hair felt strong, yet soft and I wrapped it up for the entire rest of the day. On Wednesday, it felt soft and after my work out, i applied some oil to my tips and then to the rest of my hair. It has been wrapped all day today, but I just let it down and it feels great! I did a seek and destroy on Tuesday and plan to do another one soon as I found 2 split ends that have to go. I'm sure there are many more hiding in there.

Alas, I am happy with my hair and will apply my sulfur mix tonight and seal. I like having my hair thicker as is the case when I avoid the direct heat. I believe it is better for my hair overall, to only apply heat when necessary. And with that, I continue my quest for BSL. I hope I get to APL by December, and BSL by June 2013, God willing. *sigh*

NEW GOODIES: Silk Elements Olive Oil Conditioner & Deep Conditioner

So, I had to get me some more of this good stuff!!!

Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Moisturizing Treatment

Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Moisturizing Treatment is crack for my hair and I love it! "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is the common saying and I am living by it via this product. I realized while doing my daughter's hair, that it would be good to purchase a normal conditioner as an alternative to the conditioning treatment we currently use.

So, while at Sally's I decided to take advantage of their 2 for $12 sale and purchased the Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Conditioner.

A product thumbnail of Silk Elements MegaSilk Olive Conditioner 16oz
I can't wait to use it. This will help my moisturizing treatment last a little longer. I hope. My daughter and I run through conditioner! We can't help it as our hair soaks that stuff up!

Another product on my hair lust list is the Nature's Gate Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. Hopefully, I'll get it soon! I also think I would like to do a shikakai conditioner soon. hmmm....

NEW PRODUCT REVIEW: RUSK thermal serum

I purchased the Rusk thermal serum today as an alternative to my CHI silk infusion, which I have had for, gosh, almost 2 years, probably.

Product view
The smell is a little different, but it seems to do the job. I will say, however, that it does not seem to moisturize my hair the way the CHI product appears to. Nevertheless, considering that I was (and remain) unwilling to spend approximately $24 for CHI silk infusion (at Target), I was beyond thrilled to pay $9 for a 4.2oz container of RUSK thermal serum at TJ Maxx. At Marshalls, I happened upon a lot of RUSK products and now I am beginning to think I should learn about the line. Me thinks I will!

New post about my other hair goodies of the day to follow!

SECOND REVIEW ON NATURE'S GATE SHAMPOO

IT WORKS BRILLIANTLY!!!!

I am beyond pleased with the results I have been getting from using this product. I washed my hair on Thursday afternoon and my hair was great. No tangles. The only problem is that I neglected to get all the 'gunk' off my scalp. But another wash in a few days will do the trick, I believe.

All follow-up conditioners went on great. My only issue that I must pay attention to is the fac that the shampoo REALLY moisturizes my hair and may make it seem not strong enough even after applying reconstructor. As such, I added reconstructor again and ran it through my strands, concentrating on the ends and rinsed immediately. My hair was perfect after that. I then applied SEO Con, massaging it across my head and strands, and rinsed immediately as well.

It has been 2 days since wash day and my hair feels great! After washing, I let it airdry for just over an hour then applied Chi Silk Infusion. I then blow dried for on medium for a bit and added more silk infusion. As I flat ironed, I dusted most of my hair and only passed the flat iron once. Once complete, I did a quick pass over with the flat iron again, sprayed moisture mix and sealed with CO Pomade. I wrapped my hair up for the rest of the day and it was glorious the next day!

Today, I applied moisture mix, then my sulfur mix to my scalp, sealed with CO Pomade and wrapped it up.

I might go window shopping today in Greenbelt and if I do, will let my hair down.

Yes, I'm definitely buying 2 more bottles of this shampoo!

HAIR LENGTH CHART IN INCHES FOR WIGS

I'm considering buying a new wig and was trying to figure out what the lengths would mean for me. Looking at the pic above, a 16" wig would be just fine. I'm going to buy this wig -

I'm getting it in 16". It is a synthetic but is only $39 and is free shipping. The seller "donnaqualitywigs" has a feedback score of 99.3% on ebay and has at least 150 transactions as of today. So, I will place the order and hope for the best. My reasoning for buying this wig and not one of her human hair wigs is that:

  1. price: very affordable what with free shipping being included
  2. cost effective: I doubt I will wear the wig on a regular basis, so for price, it seems like a steal
  3. Synthetic: I don't have to baby it like I would my own hair. And, given price, I can always buy another one if I like what I have and just want a back up.
Okay, off to purchase. Yipee!

UPDATE (Oct. 6): Purchased wig and it arrived in about a day. However, the hair came all the way down to just about 2" above my butt. I sent it back for a 16" and asked for the lace to be a light brown instead of a medium brown. I mailed it back on Saturday and it arrived in FL on Monday. Now waiting to receive the replacement wig.

NEW PURCHASE: SILK ELEMENTS MEGASILK INTENSE CONDITIONING MAYONAISE

Just bought the above mentioned product at Sally's. Once opened it looks very different from the previous conditioner I used to buy and this has little bits of what look like herbs in it. Will see how it works.

APHOGEE REVIEWS

I have used Aphogee thrice and like it. The first time, I left it in for about 10 minutes and followed up with SECon. The next time, I left it in for about 2 minutes and followed up with Silicon Mix Bantu. I didn't like that combo, Silicon Mix always makes my hair thin.

The 3rd time, I had shampooed, applied 10 en 1 for about 10 minutes, rinsed and applied SECon for about 15 minutes and then put some Aphogee throughout my hair but particularly on my ends and then rinsed.

I applied Silk Infusion and Keratin spray, then blowdried. My hair felt dry so I sprayed my moisture mix and curled my hair. Once completed, I added some more silk infusion and then sealed with CO Pomade. It looks good and I will add a little oil mix to my scalp later on today.

NEW PURCHASE: APHOGEE 2-MIN KERATIN RECONSTRUCTOR

So, I gave in and bought the bottle for $10. I have been using the product's sample packages for a while and decided to simply buy the bottle. It works on my hair.

I used it on Thursday evening and left it in for approximately 5 minutes, rinsed and then put Silk Elements Con in my hair for a few minutes in the shower and rinsed. My hair felt just fine.

Today, at exactly one week post wash, my hair feels crappy, but that is because I have been sweating. It also feels a little under moisturized, I must confess. I have put some of my oil mix in it and will wash tomorrow (Friday) after our trip to the pool.

I have avoided going to the hair salon, but I think I will go there next Thursday when Husband is home from work. It will be nice to get my scalp cleaned and get a heated DC.

WASH DAY AFTER SWEARING IN

I was sworn in as a US Citizen, yay!!!

Well, I needed to wash up my hair so, I shampooed with Castille Soap and then conditioned with KOProtein condition and left it on for 25 minutes. I then DCd with Silicon Elements Olive Oil for 40 minutes.

My hair felt incredible afterwords. Very strong and I noticed little to no breakage or shedding.

However as a week approached, I started to notice shedding and am preparing to wash and DC with Miss Key 10 en 1. I hope my hair will like it, but we will see. I will simply leave it in for about 35 minutes.

NEW PRODUCTS

I now am the proud owner of

Silicon Mix Bambu which I took to the salon some weeks ago for a deep condition.

 And,

Miss Key 10 en 1

My hair felt good after using Silicon Mix bambu but all that heat left my scalp dry and unhappy. No mas!

VISIT TO SINTIA'S

I went to Sintia's to get a DC last night but was a little disappointed.

The lady who washed my hair, Elise, was just fine. However, she only put me under the dryer for about 10 minutes. After about 5 minutes of being under, the lady that usually relaxes my hair asked me to come out. I told her I had only been under for 5 minutes. Then, this big lady, used to work at the Bowie Dominican place that shut down, said that 5 minutes is fine, to which I responded that I planned to stay under a little longer. The dryer soon shut off and because all the ladies were busy with other people's hair, I sat for another 5 minutes with conditioner for almost a total of 20 minutes. I mentioned to the evening manager, Heather (I think) that I did not appreciate having a conversation on the matter.

I did not get a blow out and am very happy about that. My hair did not need the extra heat and it swangs and has incredible bounce without it. Based on this experience, I don't think I will get a blow out EVER again. It just isn't necessary unless there is something going on.

Anyway, before going to bed, I put some oil on my scalp and wrapped my hair. I left my hair wrapped the next day until it was time to pick TE up from school. My hair looks and feels great. I am convinced that my hair is doing okay. It could be doing better but so far so good. I will do a seek and destroy/dusting this weekend and when next I wash my hair, I will use the Silk Elements con I purchased. I wish I had a hooded blow dryer so that I could sit under for a little bit. I think that would help prepare my hair for the next relaxer which is in 2 weeks.

Well, overall, I am happy with my hair. The shedding/breakage of earlier this week has stopped for now. The thinness I was experiencing for all these months is done for now and I simply need to keep my hair happy between now and my next relaxer. I hope to accomplish that with head massages, low manipulation and not exposing my ends and hair to the elements as much as I can.

Once I get relaxed, I will go back to BT and use it 2-3 times a week for the first 8 weeks. For the last 2 weeks, I plan to relax before traveling to Nigeria, I will moisturize my scalp once a day with oils.

Hoping for the best

NEW PRODUCTS

I re-upped on conditioners. I purchased the KO protein con that works on my daughter and I's hair. I also bought Silicon Mix con. It was $9.99 instead of the normal $12.99, so I bought it instead of the Silicon Mix Perla con.

I also boght a dye applicator comb for use on TE's hair when I need to part her hair for plaiting. I need to keep it out of the boy's reach however, because the rattail comb on it is pure metal and thus, dangerous.

POTENTIAL NEW PRODUCT

ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner.

I currently use the pak (1.75 oz) which costs $1.22 at Safeway and I think it has the right balance of protein and moisturizer for my hair, particularly in the winter. Additionally, it allows me to skip an entire process, as I used to dc with protein and then moisturizing con.

It seems to be available for about $12 (12.25 oz) so I'll look to buy it when I run out of paks. There is also a larger bottle (23 oz)
